Gertrude Dekock Keehn examines Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 7 that “ask, and it shall be given you.” As a child, she recalls, she ran upstairs to ask God for what her parents had just refused, and a missionary once told her that loving beautiful things was “a portion of your artistic temperament” from God. Asking is an infallible law, she says, and it works whether or not what is asked for is wise, a warning she gives often across the movement.
