Forty Stripes and Still Rejoicing
Merlin Carothers preaches from Paul's words that he will "glory in my infirmities" so the power of Christ may rest on him. He traces Paul's beatings, his stoning, his shipwrecks, and his singing in a jail cell at midnight. He urges campers at the 1972 Australia CFO to choose praise over grumbling.
Merlin Carothers preaches from Ephesians 5 on being "filled with the Spirit" rather than wine. He compares a joyful believer to a television set that draws others to Christ. He recalls ministering to badly wounded soldiers, and to his dying grandmother, whose praise blessed everyone who came to comfort her. The talk comes from the 1972 Australia CFO.
Holding Bread and Starving Anyway
Merlin Carothers introduces his wife Mary. She describes a dream of starving at a bake-off while holding cornbread she never eats, a picture of holding Jesus in name only. At the Australia CFO in 1972, Carothers then tells how a trailer wreck on the road to California led his family to a Wyoming rancher, who gave his heart to Christ. He urges campers that no matter what the devil intends, they stand at the center of God's perfect will.
Merlin Carothers retells how Jacob mourned for his son Joseph without knowing God's larger plan for him. In this teaching series given to the 1972 Australia CFO, he describes a morning when the Holy Spirit asked whether he was thankful that he could bend his ankle and his knee before rising. He also recalls praying for strangers each time his car stopped at a red light.
At the Australia CFO in 1972, Merlin Carothers retells the biblical story of the woman who crawled through a crowd to touch Jesus' robe, and was healed by her faith alone. He tells campers that whoever does their best for God can never truly be late. He closes with an invitation to be baptized in the Holy Spirit.
The Devil Gets the New Christian Organized
by Mary Carothers, Merlin Carothers
The devil cannot attack a new Christian head on, so he gets him "organized," Mary Carothers and Merlin Carothers tell campers: one believer after another hands him a good rule to keep, until after a year he is tired of trying and drifts away. The 1972 Australia CFO evening opens with a testimony of reading Romans 8, and of seeing that Jesus took the sins of the future as well as the past.

Merlin Carothers imagines every believer standing before God while witnesses list their faults. God silences the room by asking, "What did he do with my son?" Preaching to the Australia CFO in 1972, Carothers tells campers that faith, not feeling, is what receives the baptism in the Holy Spirit.
