  1. A Rock Called Giant Killer

Betty Malz calls herself a survivor, recounting near-fatal illnesses, a 28 minute death experience, and the loss of her first husband. She keeps a rock marked “Giant Killer” in her purse as a reminder that all she needs is God. She gave the talk at the Florida Family CFO in 1991.

  2. Hurricanes Give Warning, Tornadoes Do Not

At the Florida Family CFO in 1991, Betty Malz tells campers that a hurricane gives two weeks warning, but a tornado flattened her new home in twenty seconds. She also recalls her daughter, afraid alone during the Gainesville murders, and telling her to carry Psalm 27:5, “in the time of trouble he shall hide me,” against her heart.

  3. She Just Keeps On Giraffing

Betty Malz speaks on being at peace with yourself at the 1991 Florida Family CFO. She uses the giraffe, which cannot sing yet keeps on being itself, and the Joshua tree, which only dies from within, as pictures of contentment.

  4. Small Deposits and Great Withdrawals

Betty Malz tells campers to pray for results, not for show, and she opens each day by declaring “Yes, Lord” before her eyes are open. She points to a neighbor who built trust at his bank through years of small deposits, so a single large withdrawal was honored without question. That is a habit she carried into the Florida Family CFO in 1991.

  5. The Only Thing You Can Take With You

Betty Malz recalls the 44-day coma that followed a ruptured appendix. At the Florida Family CFO in 1991 she says it taught her that oil wells, show dogs, and quarter horses meant nothing beside the people she could invest in. As she lay near death, an untrained guitar player read her the line “he sent his word and healed them.”

  6. The Sheep Shed Church

At the 1991 Florida Family CFO, Betty Malz warns campers against judging others, using the image of checking a car’s oil before finding fault with someone else’s. She also tells of a Vietnam veteran turned pastor who nicknamed his growing congregation “the sheep shed.”

  7. Arm In Arm At the Black Gold Festival

Edwin Lively sends the 1991 Florida Family CFO back into a world that has not changed while they were away, telling them to love, to keep repenting and forgiving, and to put no minister on a pedestal. He remembers walking arm in arm past the reviewing stand at the Black Gold Festival, and praying over a broken carpet cleaning machine as a lesson in faith with work attached.

  8. Manure Christians

Edwin Lively calls his hearers manure Christians and offers to be their pooper scooper. He then takes them through three renunciations in turn: the sins of the fathers to the third and fourth generation, the whole list of occult practices, and the people who have hurt them. Along the way he mentions the pornography found under the couch of a tidy Christian home, and his own public repentance for slamming a church hall door, all of it for the Florida Family CFO in 1991.

  9. The Bald Headed Pink Lady

Edwin Lively spent a year getting himself accepted as the first man among the hospital’s pink ladies, and then as a volunteer chaplain at the state prison, because watching Jesus work is not the same as doing the works. He claims the third sign of Mark 16 over a boy’s spider bite, and prays for Christi at Dead Man’s Curve moments before a truck nearly takes her, in a message given at the Florida Family CFO in 1991.

  10. The Church That Chased Demons Up Trees

Edwin Lively tells the Florida Family CFO in 1991 how long he waited to speak in tongues and how it finally came. He was praying for twin girls at a church he describes as one that “chases demons up trees,” and then the air went electric after an argument with his father. Only later did he work out that the speech he had used with his Cuban co-workers at the sugar corporation had been tongues, all along.

  11. Who Is Jesus Anyway?

Edwin Lively names his own message and argues from scripture that Jesus is the eternal Word made flesh and the Jewish Messiah, not a figure scholars can reconstruct by voting on his words with colored beads. He also recalls confronting a man whose drugs had convinced him that he was Jesus himself, in a talk to the 1991 Florida Family CFO.

  12. Why Do the Works?

If we are saved by faith alone, Edwin Lively asks the Florida Family CFO in 1991, why do the works at all. He answers from a youth revival at St. John’s under Arthur Dasher and Charles Hodgkiss, where a teenager was delivered of what he calls “a spirit of foolishness,” and from his own father’s sudden death not long after he had gone to apologize to him.
