Betty Malz recalls the 44-day coma that followed a ruptured appendix. At the Florida Family CFO in 1991 she says it taught her that oil wells, show dogs, and quarter horses meant nothing beside the people she could invest in. As she lay near death, an untrained guitar player read her the line “he sent his word and healed them.”
Bertha Jarrett tells the movement about a French coworker who resented her simply for smiling too much. A small pamphlet called “How to Change the Other Person” showed her that only love, not argument, could reach a hurting person. She closes by describing a butterfly kit she was given. She watched a caterpillar’s crumpled new wings unfurl inside its chrysalis, and she compares the process to what that same love is doing inside every camper.
Speaking to the movement, Bill Reed tells how he revived his infant son Robbie after finding him blue and not breathing. He recalls a hospital aide who prayed silently beside him over a dying toddler. He also remembers sensing in prayer that a colleague’s leukemia diagnosis was wrong, which led to the discovery of Felty’s disease instead.
Anna Marie Sheffield describes a dream of a vine choking a live oak tree, which showed her a root of rejection planted by offhand remarks from her mother and grandmother. At the Arkansas CFO in 2004, she tells how her dying mother’s hand on her face later fulfilled Isaiah 61’s promise to “rebuild the old ruins.”
Anna Marie Sheffield and Jack Sheffield lead a healing service at the Arkansas CFO in 2004. Anna Marie opens with her testimony of learning to “seek my face” through visions of reunited loved ones. Jack follows with the story of a skeptical senior warden whose hands catch fire in prayer. The couple then lay hands on campers for arthritis, numbness, and other pain.
Alex McCullough continues the servant themed week by turning healing into the week’s quiz-and-answer refrain, “why were we healed? To serve.” He then explains that he once prayed a headache away while driving with one hand on the wheel. Only “a BB’s worth” of faith was needed, he tells the Arkansas CFO in 1999, to see six weeks later that his lifelong hay fever and cat allergy were gone.
Al Durrance teaches on the healing of memories at the Florida Family CFO in 1999. He moves from confession and the casting out of a spirit of anger to a house blessing, where his wife’s voice suddenly warns a departed stepmother she has no permission to stay. He sends her on in the name of Jesus.
Bunny Brock tells of nearly dying at eighteen from a bleeding tumor. “I am a miracle,” she says. Al Brock then teaches on the barriers that block campers from wholeness: unconfessed sin, unforgiveness, and bondage. The healing and blessing service comes from the Florida Family CFO in 1985.
At the lunch table, Ruth Robison’s three-year-old granddaughter jumped up, put a hand on her sister’s aching ear and said “Jesus, heal it.” Then she went back to add the thank you she had forgotten. Telling that at the Oklahoma Ardmore CFO in 1961, Ruth Robison presses the question Jesus put to the blind men, “Do you believe that I can do this?” She tells campers never to go to bed tired.
A child gives her teacher a melted icicle because she had seen a rainbow inside it, and Ruth Robison asks campers to carry home the rainbow rather than the experience. On communion night at the West Virginia Capon Springs CFO in 1967, she holds that communion is itself God’s healing service, and she tells of a woman quieted before cancer surgery.
