Gertrude Behanna recalls standing at dusk on the actual road to Emmaus. She recognized there that Christ had walked beside her unseen, just as he walked beside two disciples in the old story. She carries that into her own long road out of despair, and she tells the camps she had been “worshipping a dead God.”
